Tips on Working with Congressional Staff

Many people mistakenly think they should communicate with the most senior staff person. While having a good relationship with a senior staff is helpful, it’s always best to communicate with the person who handles the issues you care about – no matter what their position is.

This is going to be the right person because he/she is the one who will provide advice to the member and senior staff on voting, bill sponsorships and letter sign-ons. Talking with this person will also avoid any conflict with that person that you maybe be “going over their head” to get something done.

Whether you’re dealing with state or federal officials, their legislative staffs most assuredly are worth talking to. If you have enough contact with them, chances are your name or chapter’s name will get the legislator’s attention.
