About Giving to DBSA

Support DBSA – help touch and save lives everyday.
More than 30 million Americans suffer from mood disorders annually. Each year, one in five Americans experiences a serious emotional disturbance. In fact, mental illness is more prevalent than cancer, lung disease and heart disease combined – leading the U.S. Surgeon General to declare mental illness one of our nation’s leading public health issues. Mood disorders are indiscriminate, affecting people of all ages, races, ethnic groups and social classes.

Due to our many supporters, over the past 20 years DBSA has been able to improve recognition, early detection and diagnosis of mood disorders, help people successfully manage their diseases, improve care, expand the ability of people to receive treatment, advance research and increase acceptance and understanding of mood disorders.

Why support DBSA?

  • We come to you. DBSA offers hope, help and inspiration for people with depression and bipolar disorder (manic depression) – people in your community just like you, your family members, co-workers, and friends. Our network of more than 400 chapters and 1000 support groups throughout the country are comprised of people who meet regularly to share their experiences. We offer a number of educational materials reviewed by experts to meet your informational needs.
  • You make a difference. You make it possible for millions of television viewers, as well as newspaper and magazine readers, and Internet users to learn about mood disorders which helps to eliminate stigma and discrimination. You strengthen DBSA's voice in the mental health community and in Washington, D.C., where we educate and advocate.
  • You stay informed. Outreach, our quarterly newsletter, offers the latest news on research and treatment, news of issues that affect your life and wellness, stories about members who successfully manage their illnesses, and information about local chapters. Plus, each year DBSA holds annual conferences where hundreds of patients, families, professionals, and the public come together to receive the very latest on research and treatment. Registration fees are reduced for supporters.
  • We appreciate your contributions. It is because of our generous donors that we are able to help so many people each year and thanking our donors is a top priority at DBSA. All donors receive a personal thank you letter and those contributing $250 or more receive a receipt in addition to their letter. Please take a moment to read about the benefits available for every donor category. They range from a subscription to Outreach to complimentary conference registrations.

Please join our efforts by contributing today online, by telephone, facsimile or through the mail. Together we provide hope and help to people who suffer from mood disorders.

Funds donated to DBSA are carefully allocated as is demonstrated by our efficiency rating of 85%. This means that 85% of our total expenses are devoted solely to programs. DBSA is a not-for-profit Illinois corporation qualified under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. All gifts are deductible based on federal IRS regulations.
