Part of DBSA’s mission is to eliminate the discrimination and stigma that unfortunately is attached to mood disorders. One of the most effective ways to combat this is for people to tell their experiences living with a mood disorder. By sharing your story with us you will inspire others.

Whether you are living with a mood disorder, or you’ve helped a loved one or friend, we would like to read your account. Please type your story in the enclosed box (it’s subject to editing) and submit it. Select submissions will be posted on our web site to share with others who will gain from reading them.

If you would be willing to share your story with a news reporter, please give us your name, email address and/or phone. Even if you indicate your willingness to be interviewed, please know that absolutely no information about your identity will be released without your prior consent.

Here are a very few examples of personal stories people would benefit from reading:

  • How a person who has enjoyed very good health and success during their lifetime came to see that feeling depressed was not a character flaw, that depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, and they successfully sought treatment.
  • If you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and you were given several incorrect diagnoses before the correct one, your story will give others hope.
  • If someone has made a fatal or non-fatal attempt on his or her life as a result of a mood disorder, treated or untreated, it is information that may help another.
  • How a person living with bipolar disorder came to recognize that they need to stay on their medications, despite their mood.
  • DBSA’s on line mood disorder questionnaire (MDQ) has helped thousands of people learn more about whether they should seek professional diagnosis for bipolar disorder. I f you have been helped by the MDQ we would like to hear about your experience.

Please do not limit your story to the topics on this list. We hope you will share your experience, improvement, pain, inspiration and any other aspect of living with a mood disorder. It’s our hope that people who will gain comfort and courage from your story.
