Part of DBSA’s mission is to eliminate the discrimination and stigma that unfortunately is attached to mood disorders. One of the most effective ways to combat this is for people to tell their experiences. By sharing your story with us you will inspire others.

Whether you have personally experienced psychiatric hospitalization or you’ve helped a loved one or friend, we would like to hear from you. Please type your story in the enclosed box (it’s subject to editing) and submit it. Select submissions will be posted on our web site to share with others who will gain from reading them.

If you would be willing to share your story with a news reporter, please give us your name, email address and/or phone. Even if you indicate your willingness to be interviewed, please know that absolutely no information about your identity will be released without your prior consent.

Here are a few examples of personal stories people would benefit from reading:

  • How a person living with a mood disorder came to realize that hospitalization might be the best option for them to achieve a stable mood. 
  • How a family member helped their loved one while they were hospitalized.
  • Tips or wellness tools you learned while in the hospital. 
  • What specific things did you really like or dislike about your hospital experience? 

Please do not limit your story to the topics on this list. We hope you will share your experience, improvement, pain, inspiration and any other aspect of living with a mood disorder. It’s our hope that people who will gain comfort and courage from your story.

Submission Guidelines

  • Stories must be no more than 2000 words. 
  • All submissions are subject to editing. 
  • Edited versions of the story will not be returned for approval prior to publishing.  However, all authors may request it be removed at any time.
  • Stories may not contain names of real individuals.
  • DBSA reserves the right to not post any story.
