The
Physician’s Guide to Depression & Bipolar Disorders
|
The
Physician’s Guide to Depression & Bipolar Disorders is
the first edited volume addressing the relationship between
depression and chronic medical illness. It brings together the
most up-to-date information on this complex subject. This book
extends the work of DBSA's multidisciplinary Consensus
Conference on mood disorders and comorbid illnesses.
Depression is
very common in chronic medical illness. Depression may even figure as a
factor in the onset and course of certain medical conditions.
Conversely, certain chronic diseases may be a risk factor for depression
because of stressors, functional impairment, and other biologic
mechanisms. Depression and medical illness coexist with a decidedly
bidirectional nature.

|
The fact that
symptoms of depression are often indistinguishable from those of
co-occurring illnesses makes it
critical that clinicians understand how depression
and other
chronic medical conditions impact each other, as well
as how the treatments for each may influence the
other. There should
never again be a valid reason for not
aggressively
seeking out and treating depression in people with other medical
illnesses.
