Help Stop Cuts to Vital Mental Health Programs for Consumers!

The President’s latest budget request for SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration, drastically reduces the agency’s funding of its Centers for Mental Health Services (CMHS). The cuts are substantial with a reduction of 50% in funding that supports Statewide Consumer Network Grants. The grant program is important because it helps to ensure that there is consumer input and leadership in the development of consumer-driven mental health care systems.

These vital grants are used to target recovery by promoting use of consumer-run services and are used to address stigma, reduce mental health disparities, prevent criminalization; promote self-directed care and other network development activities.

Currently, approximately $1.3 million is provided to support 19 different grants at about $70,000 each year. Under the new proposal, grants would be at about $45,000 each.

Please take a few moments to contact your legislators (Representatives and Senators) and urge them to stop the reductions and restore funding to this important program.
